Massage for back pain, herniated disc or sciatica

It is important not to confuse sciatic pain with a herniated disc.
Massage can, however, provide effective relief if the pain is caused by the piriformis muscle. The sciatic nerve runs from the buttock into the leg. At this location, the nerve can become trapped by trigger points (contractions) in the piriformis.
By means of deep-acting trigger point massages, the trigger points can be relieved and thereby also help the sciatic nerve out of its plight, reducing pain.
Beware, do not be fooled, a hernia cannot be fixed by a massage nor its pain. A massage can, however, provide relief to the muscles around it that are overstretched, making it seem as if the pain of the herniated disc is diminishing.
A specialised massage, such as trigger point is always recommended to relieve the muscles and reduce pain.
